Life
A few things I love outside research — animals, stars, stories, movement, and exploring the world.
A few pandas I’m especially fond of

陈园润 · Yuan Run
A familiar face I’m always happy to see.

七仔 · Qizai
A particular soft spot for this brown-and-white bear.

Panda things people often don’t know
That label is misleading. Females have a short fertile window each year; habitat, finding a mate, and individual compatibility also matter.
Source ↗Pandas are born at an exceptionally early stage of development: blind, pink, and only about 85–140 grams. Much of their growth happens while nursing.
Source ↗Bamboo is difficult to digest with a bear-like digestive system. Eating for many hours helps pandas get enough nourishment.
Source ↗No. Their remaining mountain habitats also extend into Shaanxi and Gansu.
Source ↗Research identified a small deletion in Bace2 as the likely genetic basis of this rare coat colour. Brown pandas are not a different species.
Source ↗One elephant I especially love

玛丽亚 · Maria
I have a particular soft spot for Maria, especially when she is wearing grass like a hat.
Inside an elephant family
Tap a role to explore. A simplified social diagram, especially informed by African savanna elephant research; families vary.

Some rumbles include infrasound, below the usual human hearing range. Low-frequency calls help elephants communicate over distance.
Source ↗Touch is part of elephant communication. Trunk contact can be reassuring, although the meaning depends on the social context.
Source ↗They need practice! Young calves spend time learning to coordinate their trunks, alongside walking and other skills.
Source ↗Elephants show sustained interest in dead companions and their remains. These responses are striking, but we cannot directly know their subjective experience.
Source ↗Mothers receive help from other females, including younger “allomothers,” who may protect, comfort, or guide calves.
Source ↗Long lives allow elephants to retain social and ecological knowledge. Experienced elders can be important to the survival of their families.
Source ↗African elephants generally have larger ears and two finger-like trunk tips; Asian elephants have smaller ears and one trunk-tip finger.

A coordinate-based atlas, not a live horizon. Filters use celestial hemispheres and approximate evening seasons named for the Northern Hemisphere; southern seasons are reversed. Visibility depends on latitude and time. Stars near a celestial pole can be visible year-round.
Approximate recurring peaks, not a forecast for a particular year. Moonlight, latitude, weather, and time of night affect what you can see. Select a meteor for its story.
A simplified constellation guide, not tonight’s local sky. Choose a name to explore it in the atlas.
Atlas notes & sources
The IAU’s 88 constellations are areas of the sky; the familiar line figures are not official boundaries. Positions, line figures, names, and catalogue visual magnitudes are adapted from Olaf Frohn’s D3-Celestial data. Bright-star rankings use the catalogue and can differ for variable stars. Seasons are a rough right-ascension guide, not observing predictions.

Reviewed visitor recommendations will appear here.
An expanding selection, not a complete park inventory. China’s collection shows the five parks established in the first batch. Pins are approximate place locators, not boundaries or entrances.
Antarctica, explored.
Traces establishment dates of facilities in this snapshot, not the complete historical network. Closed sites absent from the source are not reconstructed; undated records are excluded here.

Complete imported COMNAP November 2024 snapshot: 114 facilities, including 83 stations. Open and temporarily closed facilities are retained; status is not live. Blank source regions remain “Not supplied.” Zhongshan Skiway has an inconsistent northern latitude in the source; its record is retained but its pin is withheld pending verification. Listing is for exploration, not permission to visit.
Ecology cards describe broad Antarctic habitats, not verified wildlife sightings around individual stations.

Ballet
Several years of ballet were probably my first introduction to movement as a language.
